Tryptych (fr. greek triptychos "threefold)
is a threefold altarpiece with the centre (corpus)
and the two wings which can be closed as a cabinet.
These are common in churches since the 14th century
The term is used presently on works of art i general.
The centre is usually portraying
the crucifixation, the Madonna the child Jesus
or similar motives.
The wings have depictions of saints.

Numera används ordet även för tredelade bildkonstverk

av Korsfästelsen, Madonnan och Barnet

de yttre panelerna har framställningar av helgongestalter.
