Tryptych (fr. greek triptychos "threefold) is a threefold altarpiece with the centre (corpus) and the two wings which can be closed as a cabinet. These are common in churches since the 14th century The term is used presently on works of art i general. The centre is usually portraying the crucifixation, the Madonna the child Jesus or similar motives. The wings have depictions of saints.
